Emergency design-build stabilization project in Puerto Rico recognized in the Specialty Construction category
WESTMINSTER, CO / ACCESS Newswire / October 20, 2026 / GeoStabilization International received an Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southeast Regional Best Project Award in the Specialty Construction category for its emergency embankment stabilization project on PR-110 in Moca, Puerto Rico.
The ENR Regional Best Projects program recognizes excellence in design and construction, honoring projects that demonstrate outstanding teamwork, safety, innovation, quality, and the ability to overcome complex construction challenges. GeoStabilization earned recognition for developing a design-build solution that stabilized a damaged bridge approach while keeping the roadway open to traffic and preserving access for the surrounding community throughout construction.
“Emergency work never comes with ideal conditions or the luxury of time. You need people who can size up a problem fast and build something that holds. That’s what our crews, engineers, and partners did here,” said Nate Beard, COO of GeoStabilization International.
The project addressed settlement and cracking along the northern approach embankment to a bridge over the Rio Culebrinas, where deteriorating conditions threatened a critical section of PR-110 serving the Moca community. The Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority (PRHTA) authorized emergency repairs to stabilize the roadway and preserve access for residents and emergency responders. GeoStabilization served as the specialty design-build subcontractor to Constructora Hartmann, SE.
A conventional repair would have required large pile-driving equipment and a full road closure. Instead, GeoStabilization and design partner Infinite Engineering, LLC developed a top-down stabilization approach that allowed crews to work from a single travel lane while keeping traffic moving on the other. The approach minimized disruption while providing a long-term solution for the damaged embankment.
The stabilization system extended approximately 1,188 linear feet along both sides of the bridge approach. It incorporated reinforced shotcrete soil nail walls, self-drilling and vertical soil nails, grouted columns installed through the existing pavement, drainage improvements, and erosion-control measures. The completed project restored two-way traffic and strengthened the roadway’s long-term stability.
The award will be presented Oct. 23 during the ENR Southeast Regional Best Projects event in Orlando, Florida.
The PR-110 project will also be featured in an upcoming webinar, “Southeast Geotechnical Construction, From Development to Disasters,” on Nov. 17, 2026. GeoStabilization experts will discuss site assessment, rapid response coordination during emergencies and disasters, field-tested construction approaches, and lessons learned from projects across the Southeast, including this year’s ENR Southeast award winner for specialty construction.
