GARDEN CITY, NY, UNITED STATES, October 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Joseph Stone Capital, LLC, a full-service broker-dealer, today outlined five questions investors may want to review with their tax and financial professionals before December 31. Many investors use this time of year to see whether realized or unrealized losses can offset gains for the 2026 tax year.
“Nobody wants a loss in their portfolio, but you can still handle one thoughtfully,” Joseph Stone Capital said. “Year-end is a natural time to look at the whole picture: what gained, what lost, and what the tax rules allow.”
Joseph Stone Capital’s five questions:
Which positions show an unrealized loss, and does the original reason for owning them still hold? A loss alone is not a reason to sell.
What gains have been realized this year? Under current IRS rules, capital losses offset capital gains. Up to $3,000 of net capital loss ($1,500 if married filing separately) can offset ordinary income each year, and the rest carries forward.
Will the wash-sale rule apply? If an investor buys a substantially identical security within 30 days before or after selling at a loss, the loss is disallowed for that year.
How would a sale change the portfolio’s mix and risk? Harvesting a loss should not leave a portfolio more concentrated than intended.
Are any holdings private or illiquid? A loss on a private investment generally can’t be recognized until a sale or another qualifying event, so plan the timing with a tax adviser.
“Tax-loss harvesting is a planning tool, not a prediction,” the firm said. “The right answer depends on each investor’s full tax picture.”
